The way a person's skin glows is the new “window to the soul.” These days, if your skin reflects light and boasts an even tone, it may conjure up thoughts in the mind of passers-by like, “Wow, they must have their shit together.” As much as this may be true, not everyone has to have their ducks in a row in order to have gleaming skin. Tata, founder and trail-blazer of Tata Harper Skincare, will equip you with all the products you need to turn heads on your way to the grocery store, laundromat, or a five-course dinner party. Below, an exclusive interview with the skincare maven for product junkies, skincare newbies, and everyone in between.
Why did you decide to get into skin care? Did you ever suffer from bad skin?
It really had to do with taking on a new, more wellness-based lifestyle for me. I had always been healthy, considerably speaking, but I became aware of what I was putting in and onto my body when a family member was diagnosed with cancer. At that point (more than 7 years ago), I realized there was a clear void in the market.. you couldn’t get natural AND luxurious textures and formulas so I sought out to create my own.
Do you have to be a scientist to start your own skincare line? What is the simple outline of your journey to creating Tata Harper?
It started out as just me working with a team of 8 scientists in Vermont. We hired a couple of people at the very beginning to help make the product, but it was just a few of us working in one room. Today we have 150+ employees at our farm and in our global sales team
What was your goal when creating Tata Harper? What was the hole in the market you were trying to fill?
When I started the brand, there were no natural skincare lines that gave me the results and luxury experience that I was looking for. I believe that no one should have to sacrifice their health for their beauty.
What beauty products do you swear by? Which one product do you keep buying and rebuying?
Elixir Vitae is the product I swear by, and I’m lucky I don’t have to buy or rebuy! Aside from my own line, I really love to create my own spa experience at home, so I love using my Dr. Dennis Gross steamer for facial treatments and Foreo brush to help exfoliate and massage my skin.
What is your best kept secret to clear skin? What is the strangest, most unexpected thing you put or use on your face?
I have never been a big fan of a lot of makeup. I feel when I use a lot makeup it ages me, which defeats the purpose of using it in the first place. I’ve always been a fan of showing my own skin, which is probably why my skincare routine has always been maximalist. I keep makeup minimal because when your skin is healthy you don’t need that much makeup. Glowing healthy skin, is beautiful skin.
I pretty much try everything that we use in our products, which is really fun. We use 68 ingredients from around the world – from Argentina to Vietnam.. so things are always interesting. I guess people would find it strange how much I love and use algae? We have it in on our new Clarifying Cleanser, and it’s in our mask from the line as well.
Do you believe in a multi-step routine? Or is keeping it simple better?
I am definitely someone who believes in a multi-step routine, that being said, it doesn’t take me a lot of time – a lot of products can still be done quickly. In the morning I always exfoliate and polish with the Regenerating Cleanser in the morning – exfoliating daily really allows my skin to be buildup free and glowing, and lets products sink in better. I follow with the Hydrating Floral Essence to help prep my skin for treatment and allow my serums to penetrate deeper. Then it’s all about layering - I use Elixir Vitae Serum on my whole face, Restorative Eye Crème around my eyes, and then the Repairative Moisturizer. Last but not least I usually put a layer of Be Adored on my lips for a plump, rosy look. At night I love to double cleanse. First I massage in Nourishing Oil Cleanser. I follow with the Purifying Cleanser, especially when I’m travelling and my skin has been exposed to a lot of pollution. Then I use the Concentrated Brightening Essence and Elixir Vitae Serum on my face and the Boosted Contouring Serum on my neck. I like a thicker eye cream at night so usually use a thick layer of the Boosted Contouring Eye Mask, then Replenishing Nutrient Complex as my last layer.
What is your favorite facial?
I was just in Paris and had the opportunity to get a Pore Refining For Balanced Skin facial at our treatment room in Le Bristol, that uses our new Clarifying Cleanser. It was a dream!!
